This roadside view is on Littleneck Road, a backroad to the Savannah airport. The bald cypress is deciduous and has swollen, buttressed trunks. These trees are abundant in the swamps of the Ogeechee River Basin. Waterlilies are a common sight in Savannah's swamps due to slow moving fresh water and nutrient rich soil. Waterlilies root in the muddy bottom of the swamps which provide the nutrients for their growth. Open canopy areas of the cypress trees allow sunlight to reach the water surface for more growth of the lilies.
