THE FABULOUS FOX - $10,000

Conceived in 1928 as a lavish headquarters for Atlanta’s Shriners, the Fox Theatre drew inspiration from Spain’s Alhambra and Egypt’s Temple of Karnak. Its ornate design—featuring soaring domes, minarets, gold leaf, and trompe l’oeil artwork—proved too costly for the Shriners, who leased the building to movie mogul William Fox.

The theatre opened on Christmas Day 1929 with the premiere of Disney’s Steamboat Willie and quickly became an Atlanta landmark, hosting films, opera, live performances, and dances. Financial strain during the Great Depression led to bankruptcy in 1932, and while the Fox was auctioned, it continued operating successfully for decades.

By the early 1970s, neglect threatened the theatre with demolition. In response, Atlantans launched the “Save The Fox” campaign, raising $3 million to restore the building. Reopened in 1975, the Fox Theatre is now operated by the nonprofit Fox Theatre, Inc. Today, it hosts more than 250 events annually and remains one of America’s most celebrated historic venues.

FRIENDS of the Olmsted Arts is an active base of supporters who ensure that Olmsted Arts educational offerings and events (Olmsted Plein Air Invitational and Georgia Color ) exist and thrive into the future.
